Job Summary
The Animal Care and Veterinary Technology Program Associate Facility Manager works in tandem with the Facility Manager to manage the day-to-day operations, animal welfare and veterinary care in accordance with regulatory agencies. Responsible for full operational oversight and execution during the assigned shift, including staff supervision, decision-making, and ensuring continuity of daily operations. Ensures all facilities, equipment and physical operations meet program requirements. This position will work opposite the Animal Care and Veterinary Technology Program Facility Manager to provide continuous support for program animals and students handling animals.
Essential Functions
- Management of animal care, scheduling, performs annual and other periodic evaluations under the direction of the Veterinary Technology Program Director and Associate Director.
- Manages animal care personnel including undergraduate and graduate students and part-time employees.
- Oversees day-to-day operations of the animal facilities: Oversight of the proper care and use of animals including routine animal husbandry, animal receiving, animal transportation, importation, and exportation. Ensures efficient and effective cage/kennel wash operations and equipment.
- Plans and implements assignment of space and equipment for animal research projects. Assists with monitoring compliance with state and federal regulations and AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) accreditation standards. Maintains appropriate records as required by federal agencies and the University.
- Develops and refines policies, procedures, and practices that ensure high-quality, cost-effective operation of the animal facilities, while maintaining close collaboration with the Manager. Collaboratively coordinates the annual review and revision of Standard Operating Procedures for Animal Care to ensure alignment with current practices.
- Plays a key role in personnel management, collaborating with the Manager on hiring and termination decisions, initiating and leading disciplinary processes, and providing critical input in performance evaluations.
- Ensures the facilities and equipment are maintained and in proper condition.
- Schedules weekly rounds and facility review with the attending veterinarian.
- Schedules all program animal medical procedures and treatments. Assists the attending veterinarian in all medical care for program animals, including the coordination of animal or facility emergencies.
- Reviews and manages the budget projections for accuracy and completeness to reflect the needs of the veterinary technology program.
- Manages, selects, and maintains resources, inventory of materials or equipment to support operation of the veterinary technology program.
- Records accurate documentation necessary for regulatory compliance.
- Responsible for animal procurement and adoption.
- Provides instructional support in laboratories or courses as assigned by the Veterinary Technology Program Director.
